Former Chief Deputy Accused of Trading Departmental Weapons for Drugs: A Case of Misconduct at the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office

A former Chief Deputy of the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, Ron James, has been accused of trading departmental weapons to support his drug addiction. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in to look into the matter, resulting in James being charged with theft and violation of office dating back to 2018. The investigation revealed that James was using methamphetamine and exchanging TCSO firearms to fuel his drug habit.

The allegations against James came to light after Sheriff Tim Watkins was notified of a video showing James using a methamphetamine smoking device at his residence while off duty. James admitted to having an addiction to prescription medication Adderall and requested intervention from the county’s Employee Assistance Program. Following a narcotics test, James was found to have methamphetamines in his system, and a device used for smoking methamphetamines was discovered in his department vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that James had given TCSO firearms to an ex-employee in exchange for Adderall. The county commission requested the GBI's assistance in investigating the missing property belonging to the TCSO and placed James on administrative leave without pay. Despite the ongoing investigation, James resigned from his position, citing the impact of recent events on his health, family, and ability to serve effectively.

James expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have served the citizens of Thomas County for 33 years but believed it was in his best interest to step down. The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in dealing with internal misconduct and the importance of maintaining integrity within the department.
