Squatter Exploits California Rental Laws: The Story of Ellie Mae McNulty in Malibu

An individual known as a "serial squatter" has been accused of exploiting California's tenant-friendly rental laws to harass residents in Malibu. This person, Ellie Mae McNulty, is featured in a new Hulu docuseries called "Squatters: Get the F*** Out of My House," where her alleged actions are highlighted.

McNulty, a British actress and screenwriter, is said to have manipulated her way into people's homes in Malibu and then refused to leave, causing distress to the homeowners.

One of her alleged victims was Alden Marin, an artist and cancer patient, who allowed McNulty to stay at his home temporarily. However, her stay extended far beyond what was agreed upon, and she reportedly became rude, demanding, and hostile during her time there.

McNulty's behavior included using Marin's credit cards, changing the locks on his home while he was hospitalized, and causing damage to the property by flushing cloth napkins down the toilet.

Despite the allegations against her, McNulty has disputed the claims made by Marin, stating that he changed the locks while her belongings were still inside the residence.

The situation in California, where guests can be considered tenants after a certain period of occupancy, makes it challenging for homeowners to promptly remove unwanted individuals from their property.

Marin eventually took legal action against McNulty in 2022, leading to a court order for her to vacate his property. Further investigation revealed that McNulty had been involved in more than 10 legal cases over nearly two decades, with similar accusations from other residents in the Point Dume area.

Previous victims of McNulty's alleged squatting activities include an elderly widow in Santa Monica, a yoga teacher who claimed she was not paid rent, and others who accused her of exploiting California's tenant protections to prolong her stays.

Fox News Digital has attempted to contact McNulty for her response to the allegations.
