Hope Renewed: Amy Piccoli's Journey to a Liver Transplant for Stage IV Colon Cancer
Amy Piccoli's journey with Stage IV colon cancer began unexpectedly after a stomach bug in May 2024 led to a series of tests revealing liver spots and a mass in her colon. Despite having no prior symptoms or family history of cancer, Piccoli was diagnosed with late-stage colorectal cancer. Her shock and fear were compounded by the grim statistics she found online over Memorial Day weekend. However, a combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy led to significant tumor shrinkage, allowing for the removal of the colon tumor but leaving the liver tumors untreatable through surgery alone.
Piccoli's search for alternative treatments led her to consider liver transplants, a relatively new approach that has shown promising results in increasing five-year survival rates for patients like her. After meeting the strict criteria for the procedure, including finding a suitable living donor, Piccoli underwent a successful transplant in December 2025 at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. The surgery marked the end of a challenging journey for Piccoli, who remained optimistic about her future and the opportunity to live a long life for her children.
The liver transplant not only offered Piccoli a chance at a cancer-free life but also provided closure to a tumultuous period filled with uncertainty and fear. Despite the challenges of being away from her family during the recovery process, Piccoli remained determined to overcome the obstacles and embrace the hope that the transplant brought. Her resilience and courage throughout the journey exemplify the power of medical advancements and the unwavering support of loved ones in the face of adversity.
