Indian Mariners Lost at Sea: Tragic Incident Involving M/T Settebello and U.S. Navy Blockade

Three Indian mariners lost their lives when the U.S. Navy fired on the Palau-flagged M/T Settebello for violating the U.S. blockade on Iran. The Navy targeted the vessel's engine room to disable it. The incident took place during U.S. self-defense strikes against Iran following an attack on a U.S. Army Apache helicopter by an Iranian drone. India's Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, confirmed the casualties and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased seafarers.

Sonowal described the incident as a tragic loss to the maritime community and assured support to the families of the victims. The Modi government stands in solidarity with the bereaved during this challenging time. The minister did not provide reasons for the ship's actions that led to the confrontation with the U.S. Navy. In contrast, the U.S. Central Command accused the Settebello of attempting to transport oil from Iran and violating the blockade in the Gulf of Oman.

The U.S. Central Command disabled the Palau-flagged M/T Settebello as it sailed through the Gulf of Oman. Despite repeated warnings, the crew failed to comply with American directives, leading to precision strikes on the ship's engine room. This enforcement action marked the eighth time Central Command used military force against non-compliant vessels in the region. Since the blockade's initiation on April 13, Central Command redirected 134 compliant ships and allowed 42 vessels to transport humanitarian aid.

In conclusion, the tragic incident involving the M/T Settebello underscores the risks faced by seafarers navigating through conflict zones. The loss of three Indian mariners serves as a reminder of the challenges in maritime operations during times of geopolitical tensions. The support extended by the Indian government to the families of the deceased highlights the importance of solidarity and assistance in times of tragedy.
