Accelerating Automation: PepsiCo's Partnership with Gatik Paves the Way for Driverless Trucks in the U.S.

The road to automation is accelerating as industries embrace driverless trucks. PepsiCo has teamed up with autonomous vehicle startup Gatik to deploy a fleet of 35 driverless trucks, marking a significant milestone in the U.S. transportation sector. These trucks, equipped with advanced technology like cameras, radar, and lidar, are part of Gatik's innovative design that has already generated $600 million in revenue through partnerships with various companies.

PepsiCo's Senior Vice President of Supply Chain, Jim Farrell, emphasized the real-world application of these driverless trucks, highlighting their operational success in multiple markets. Despite some concerns from unions like the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who have historically opposed autonomous vehicles, PepsiCo and Gatik are forging ahead with their autonomous trucking initiative.

Safety remains a top priority in the autonomous vehicle industry, with past incidents prompting recalls from companies like Waymo and Tesla. However, PepsiCo's driverless trucks have demonstrated impressive on-time arrival performance, reaching 99% efficiency, excluding external factors like traffic and weather. This reliability aligns closely with the Federal Highway Administration's standard expectation of truckers arriving on time 95% of the time.

Beyond the transportation sector, various industries are embracing artificial intelligence for automation. Amazon's Jeff Bezos has reportedly explored a $100 billion investment in acquiring manufacturing companies to implement AI-driven processes through "Project Prometheus." The projected surge in AI spending by Big Tech, estimated at $5.3 trillion from 2025 to 2030 by Goldman Sachs, reflects the growing trend of integrating AI into everyday operations.

As the role of AI continues to expand, a Pew Research Center survey from September 2025 revealed that over half of Americans express more concern than excitement about AI's increasing presence in daily life. This sentiment underscores the need for ongoing dialogue and collaboration to ensure the responsible and effective integration of AI technologies across industries.
