Target Recalls Up & Up Baby Wipes Due to Bacterial Contamination: Important Safety Alert for Parents

Target is issuing a voluntary recall of two varieties of its store brand baby wipes due to the presence of bacteria found during testing. The affected products are Up & Up's fragrance-free and cucumber-scented baby wipes. The Food and Drug Administration discovered two types of bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, in samples of the wipes. These bacteria could cause serious infections, especially in infants, prompting Target to recall the products as a precaution.

The FDA warns that the bacteria could lead to severe and life-threatening infections, particularly in newborns, infants, and young children with immature immune systems. While healthy individuals may only experience a local infection, infants could develop bloodstream infections, pneumonia, or sepsis, a potentially fatal condition. Target and the manufacturer of the wipes have received reports of skin and eye irritation, as well as infections linked to the use of the wipes, although the severity of these infections is still under investigation.

Customers who have purchased the affected baby wipes are advised to discontinue use immediately and contact Target for a refund. Detailed information on the specific products impacted, including product codes, can be found in the recall notice. It is crucial to act promptly to prevent any potential health risks associated with the contaminated wipes.
