Legal Action Against U.S. Government for Negligence in Trump Rally Shooting Incident

Two individuals who were injured in a shooting incident at a Pennsylvania rally where an attempt was made to assassinate Donald Trump are taking legal action against the federal government. James Copenhaver and David Dutch have filed separate lawsuits alleging gross negligence on the part of the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security for failing to secure the event premises in Butler, Pennsylvania, specifically citing the AGR Complex roof used by the shooter, Thomas Crooks.

The lawsuits name the United States government as the defendant, with the plaintiffs joined by their wives in the legal action. Dutch and Copenhaver suffered gunshot wounds during the incident, with Dutch undergoing multiple surgeries for his injuries and Copenhaver having fragments from the bullets still lodged in his body.

The shooting took place on July 13, 2024, at a campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Crooks fired at Trump before being shot by a Secret Service sniper. Corey Comperatore, a former volunteer fire chief who attended the event, was killed while shielding his family.

The lawsuits detail the series of preventable failures by the Secret Service that allowed the shooting to occur, highlighting the failure to secure the complex roof despite prior warnings about its vulnerability. The legal filings also criticize the fragmented communication methods and separate command centers established by the Secret Service, which hindered the sharing of critical information.

In addition to seeking damages of $150,000, interest, and attorney fees, the lawsuits argue that the assassination attempt could have been prevented if the Secret Service had followed protocols and procedures. The complaints also point out that the Secret Service acknowledged its failures, including breakdowns in communication and technological issues that contributed to the shooting.

Both Copenhaver and Dutch are seeking accountability for the lapses in security that led to the shooting and are pursuing legal action to hold the government responsible for the incident. The lawsuits aim to address the failures that occurred during the event and seek justice for the victims of the shooting.
