Ukrainian Drone Strike Casts Shadow Over St. Petersburg Economic Forum

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an annual event showcasing Russia's economic achievements, was marred by a Ukrainian drone strike that set an oil terminal ablaze, casting a shadow over President Vladimir Putin's hometown. The attack highlighted Ukraine's ability to strike deep inside Russia, causing disruptions in St. Petersburg, including delayed flights and restricted cellphone internet service.

Putin, who had previously scaled down the Victory Day parade due to fears of drone strikes, faces increasing vulnerability as Ukraine's attacks hit closer to home. The Kremlin has responded by intensifying its military operations in Ukraine to prevent further strikes, with recent attacks in Kyiv resulting in casualties.

Despite Western officials and business leaders avoiding the forum since Russia's incursion into Ukraine, Russia aims to attract guests from other regions to promote a "multipolar world." Special guests at the forum include Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, and China, with limited U.S. representation.

Russia's economic outlook has dimmed as military spending wanes, leading to tax hikes and increased borrowing to manage the budget deficit. Putin is expected to downplay economic challenges during the forum, but the recent attack on St. Petersburg's port near the venue underscores the impact of the ongoing conflict on Russia's economy.

Prior to the forum's opening, Ukrainian drones targeted the Kronstadt naval base, a historic site for Russia's Baltic Fleet. The base's symbolic significance as a naval stronghold adds to the growing challenges posed by the conflict, further complicating Russia's economic recovery efforts.
