Michael Jackson's impact on pop music and music videos is undeniable. Despite his global acclaim with the release of "Thriller" in 1982, MTV initially refused to air his videos. The channel, known for revolutionizing the entertainment industry, hesitated to showcase Black artists, believing they didn't fit their rock demographic. However, after CBS Records President Walter Yetnikoff threatened to pull all CBS artists from MTV, the channel relented and aired "Billie Jean" on March 10, 1983. This marked the first time a music video by a Black artist received heavy rotation on MTV, paving the way for Jackson to become the King of Pop. His videos, often referred to as short films, revolutionized the medium and saved MTV from financial ruin. Jackson's success on the channel helped break color barriers and showcased that Black artists could achieve mainstream success in various genres.
