Offshore Earthquakes Shake California North Coast: A Recap of the Recent Seismic Activity

A series of offshore earthquakes rattled the California North Coast early Wednesday morning. The quakes included a magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Petrolia, striking at 5:45 a.m., and a larger magnitude 5.7 earthquake off the coast of Pistol River, Oregon, just before 4 a.m. An apparent aftershock of magnitude 4.5 followed the Petrolia quake shortly after. These earthquakes were shallow, with depths of less than a mile below the seafloor. The USGS predicted low impact from the larger quakes, with no major damage expected. There was no tsunami warning or threat issued by the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center.
