The Mexican soccer federation has lost its latest appeal against FIFA sanctions for fans chanting an anti-gay slur at opponents' players just days before the World Cup in Mexico City. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled against Mexico in a series of appeal cases over the past decade, with the men's national team set to host South Africa on June 11 at the Azteca Stadium, where the chant is often heard. The chant, a derogatory term in Spanish, has been a persistent issue despite efforts by the federation to address it.
FIFA has fined Mexico for incidents involving the chant at games in 2024 against Bolivia, Uruguay, Brazil, and the United States. Despite education programs and requests from the federation, fans have continued to engage in the abusive behavior, prompting FIFA to take action.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA's fines totaling 140,000 Swiss francs ($178,000) against Mexico. While acknowledging the federation's efforts to address the issue since 2015, the court emphasized that the behavior of fans was widespread and not isolated incidents. The court also noted the unique challenge facing Mexican soccer officials in addressing the chant and held the federation accountable for the fans' conduct.
Mexico is set to host World Cup group-stage matches against South Korea in Guadalajara and the Czech Republic at the Azteca Stadium.
