Introducing Project Solara: Microsoft's AI-Driven Operating System for Agent-Centric Devices

Microsoft has introduced "Project Solara," a new operating system tailored for devices that utilize AI agents, during Build 2026. This platform is specifically designed to support agent-driven experiences and is based on Android rather than Windows. The company showcased two Project Solara concept devices at the event: the Desk concept and the badge concept. The Desk concept resembles an Amazon Echo Show and features facial recognition for access to AI agents. The badge concept, on the other hand, is a wearable device with a camera and fingerprint scanner that can activate an AI agent with a single press. It also has the capability to record conversations and transcribe them instantly, as well as allow the agent to view what the user sees.
While Microsoft does not intend to release these specific devices, they will serve as reference designs for other hardware manufacturers to incorporate into actual products. Project Solara is optimized for agent-centric devices and offers a high level of flexibility, as stated by Microsoft fellow Steven Bathiche. Several companies, including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Healthcare, and Target, are preparing to initiate pilots of the hardware. Microsoft opted for a version of Android, known as the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform, over Windows to cater to smaller, energy-efficient devices while maintaining the necessary management and security features expected by IT departments.
Although the project is still in its early stages, Microsoft aims to venture into AI hardware as the demand for such devices is projected to increase in the near future. Competitors like Google and Meta are also developing their own AI gadgets, while OpenAI is collaborating with Jony Ive to create devices. The company's decision to focus on AI hardware reflects the evolving landscape of technology and the growing importance of artificial intelligence in various consumer products.
