Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to Testify on Controversial Justice Department Fund Before House Appropriations Committee

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is scheduled to testify before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday regarding the Justice Department's budget. The focus of the hearing is likely to be on the controversial $1.8 billion fund that could compensate allies of President Donald Trump who feel they were unfairly investigated and prosecuted. The fund has sparked outrage, particularly over concerns that individuals involved in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, could be eligible for payouts.
The Trump administration is reconsidering moving forward with the fund following backlash from Republicans and legal challenges. A Virginia court has temporarily blocked the administration's "Anti-Weaponization Fund," prompting a pause in the plan for at least two weeks. The administration has defended the fund as a response to alleged weaponization of the Justice Department during President Joe Biden's administration, a claim strongly denied by the Biden administration.
The reaction to the fund among Republicans in Congress has been hostile, with many calling for limits to be imposed or for the idea to be scrapped altogether. Acting Attorney General Blanche has faced opposition from GOP senators, with concerns raised about the possibility of individuals involved in the Capitol riot receiving compensation. Blanche has stated that anyone who feels persecuted by the criminal justice system can apply for payouts, which will be determined by a five-member commission appointed by him.
During a private meeting with Republican senators, Blanche faced significant opposition, with more than half expressing concerns and some reportedly shouting at him. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas described the meeting as having "fireworks at an epic level," with Blanche adamantly stating that individuals who assaulted police at the Capitol would not receive compensation. Despite the controversy surrounding the fund, Blanche is expected to address questions and concerns from lawmakers during the upcoming hearing.
