Unyielding Efforts: The Search for Journalist Austin Tice

U.S. officials reached out to Russia for assistance in securing the release of journalist Austin Tice, who went missing in Syria in 2012. Despite various attempts and leads, Tice's whereabouts remained unknown. Former national security adviser Robert O'Brien sought help from Russian national security adviser Nikolai Patrushev, who agreed to use Russia's influence with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to aid in Tice's release. However, these efforts did not yield results, as even Assad's allies faced challenges in locating Tice.

Multiple individuals and entities, including Kash Patel, actor Sean Penn, the Vatican, and the king of Jordan, attempted to gather information or establish communication with the Assad regime to find Tice. In 2020, O'Brien sent U.S. officials Patel and Roger Carstens to Syria to meet with the country's head of intelligence, Ali Mamlouk. Despite concerns about the risks involved and disagreements within the Trump administration, the officials' mission did not lead to Tice's release.

Penn, who had previously assisted in similar cases, shared information from a Lebanese businessman claiming to have seen Tice in Syria. O'Brien met with Penn and the businessman to explore potential connections with the regime, but these efforts did not materialize. Additionally, O'Brien sought assistance from Jordan's King Abdullah II and connected with a Lebanese businessman with ties to Assad through a Vatican-hosted dinner, but these avenues did not result in Tice's release.

Despite numerous attempts by various individuals and entities, including diplomatic efforts and backchannel communications, journalist Austin Tice's whereabouts remain unknown. The search for Tice continues, with U.S. officials and allies exploring every possible lead to secure his release and bring him back home.
