French Government Launches Investigation into Treatment of Activists on Gaza-Bound Flotilla

France has requested an investigation by the public prosecutor into the treatment of French nationals who were part of a recent activist flotilla bound for Gaza. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced this decision after receiving a report from the Consul General in Turkey detailing incidents of sexual violence, exposure to the cold, beatings, and humiliation suffered by French nationals. These acts are believed to constitute criminal offenses, prompting the referral to the public prosecutor.

The flotilla, which was detained last week while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, reported instances of abuse suffered by activists, resulting in several hospitalizations and at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape. The activists have since been released, but the lawyers representing the French flotilla members plan to file a separate complaint regarding the violence, humiliation, rape, and torture experienced by their clients.

Despite an invitation from Barrot's office to discuss the matter, the lawyers declined, expressing their dissatisfaction with the French government's support for Israel. They emphasized that the minister's statements would not distract from the alleged mistreatment of the activists during the flotilla mission.

In conclusion, the French government's decision to investigate the treatment of French nationals involved in the activist flotilla to Gaza reflects a commitment to addressing potential criminal offenses and ensuring justice for those who suffered abuse and violence during the mission.
