Sports Betting Influencer Pleads Guilty in Elaborate Basketball Gambling Schemes

A key player in elaborate gambling schemes involving professional and college basketball has pleaded guilty to multiple charges in two separate criminal cases. Marves Fairley, known for his social media presence as a sports betting influencer, confessed to using nonpublic information to place fraudulent bets on NBA games in a case brought by prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York. Fairley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering related to the professional basketball betting case.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn revealed that Fairley acquired inside information on former Miami Heat player Terry Rozier's intentional underperformance in a 2023 game, as well as undisclosed medical details about Los Angeles Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Fairley acknowledged paying a player to alter their game performance for his benefit during the court hearing.

In addition to the NBA betting case, Fairley also admitted to engaging in recruiting and bribing college basketball players to underperform in games and placing bets in a separate NCAA point-shaving case prosecuted by federal authorities in Pennsylvania. He pleaded guilty to five counts, including sports bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud in the NCAA case.

The federal government recommended a sentence of eight to ten years in prison for Fairley, emphasizing his leadership role in the schemes and the substantial profits he gained from the illicit activities. Fairley's guilty pleas mark significant developments in the ongoing investigations into corruption and fraud in the world of professional and college basketball.
