Political Turmoil in Spain: Corruption Scandals and Investigations Rock the Socialist Party

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican ahead of the pontiff's upcoming visit to Spain. Spanish police conducted a search at the Socialist Party's headquarters in Madrid as part of an investigation into potential illegal financing. The party, led by Prime Minister Sanchez, has faced numerous corruption scandals involving key allies and family members.

Former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is under investigation for allegedly heading an influence-peddling and money-laundering network. The network reportedly benefited from lobbying public authorities on behalf of third parties, particularly Spanish airline Plus Ultra. Zapatero, a close associate of Prime Minister Sanchez, has denied any wrongdoing and is scheduled to testify in June.

The investigation into Zapatero adds to the challenges facing Prime Minister Sanchez, who is already dealing with a separate corruption probe involving kickbacks to his inner circle. The scrutiny also extends to his wife and brother, further complicating the political landscape for the Socialist government.
