Jonathan Loadholt Sentenced to 10 Years for Plot to Assassinate Iranian American Writer Masih Alinejad

A former truck and bus driver, Jonathan Loadholt, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a federal judge for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Iranian American writer Masih Alinejad. Loadholt, a resident of Staten Island, pleaded guilty to conspiracies related to stalking and money laundering in the attack plan that targeted Alinejad in Brooklyn in 2024. The FBI thwarted the assassination plot, which was allegedly orchestrated by the Iranian government.

Loadholt, a U.S. citizen, was reportedly motivated by greed to carry out the plan to kill Alinejad. The U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton stated that Iran sought to silence Alinejad due to her activism against the Iranian regime's discriminatory practices and human rights violations. Loadholt's lawyers argued for leniency, emphasizing that he was misled about the true nature of the surveillance he was asked to conduct, although he was aware of the potential for violence.

In a letter to the judge, Loadholt expressed deep remorse for his actions, acknowledging that his involvement was morally wrong. His friend, Carlisle Rivera, who was also implicated in the plot, apologized in court before receiving a 15-year prison sentence. Alinejad, a vocal advocate for women's rights, left Iran in 2009 and has since been promoting freedom of expression for Iranian women through online campaigns and public speaking engagements worldwide.

Alinejad's activism has made her a target of the Iranian government, which allegedly put a bounty on her head. In a separate incident in 2022, two men were convicted of plotting to kidnap Alinejad from her Brooklyn residence and were sentenced to 25 years in prison. Alinejad's work as an author and journalist has garnered international attention, with her efforts to empower women and challenge oppressive regimes resonating with audiences globally.
