Urgent Alert: Invasive Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter Found on Grapevine Plants Sold at Napa Costco

A recent discovery of the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter on grapevine plants sold at Costco Wholesale in Napa has prompted Napa County officials to urge community members to check their purchased plants for signs of the pest. The insect, known for spreading Pierce's disease, was found on grape vine shipments from Burchell Nursery, Inc. in Fresno County to various counties, including Sonoma, Marin, Solano, and Yolo. Costco in Napa received multiple shipments of these plants, with 63 grapevines already destroyed and one sharpshooter egg mass discovered. The remaining 157 grapevines are unaccounted for, potentially in the possession of customers who bought them.
Costco is actively reaching out to members who bought the affected plants and is working closely with county agricultural commissioners to address the situation. The glassy-winged sharpshooter poses a significant threat to local vineyards, as well as almond, citrus, and ornamental plants. Napa County Agricultural Commissioner Tracy Cleveland emphasized the importance of community cooperation in identifying and containing the risk to local agriculture. Vigilance and immediate reporting are crucial in managing the situation.
Individuals who purchased grapevines, citrus trees, or fruit trees from Napa Costco or nearby locations in April or May are advised to take specific precautions. They should keep the plant isolated in its original container, refrain from planting it, and securely seal it in two trash bags if possible. The plant should not be returned, transported, or disposed of in regular trash or compost bins. Instead, contact the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner's Office promptly for inspection and further guidance. Agricultural inspectors will assess the plant and surrounding host plants, potentially setting up monitoring traps on the property as a precautionary measure.
The discovery of the glassy-winged sharpshooter on grapevine plants sold at Costco in Napa has raised concerns about the spread of Pierce's disease and the potential impact on local agriculture. Community members are urged to be vigilant and report any purchased plants for inspection to prevent further infestation and protect vineyards and other crops in the region. Immediate action and cooperation are essential in mitigating the risk posed by this invasive pest.
