France Heatwave: Record High Temperatures in May Spark Concerns and Caution

France experienced a surge in temperatures, with record highs for the month of May reported over the weekend. The city of Rennes saw temperatures reaching 27C on Monday, prompting residents like 74-year-old Daniele Dupont to seek shelter from the heat. Parts of Brittany were placed under a yellow heatwave alert for the second consecutive day, signaling the need for caution in the region. Meteo France highlighted that this was the first yellow heatwave alert issued in May since the system's inception in 2004.
Several locations in France, including Lorient and Noirmoutier, recorded record high temperatures for the month of May on Sunday. Paris also experienced its first temperature above 30C for the year, reaching 31.9C. Tragically, a man lost his life during a running race in Paris due to a heart attack, while ten other runners were hospitalized in critical condition after a race in Maisons-Alfort.
In response to the heatwave, residents like 66-year-old Bernard Siffert adjusted their routines to avoid the peak temperatures. Scientists emphasize that recurring heatwaves are a clear indication of global warming and predict that these extreme weather events will become more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense in the future.
