Community Mourns Loss of Army Veteran Beaten Outside Trump-Themed Home in Escondido

A man who was severely beaten outside his President Trump-themed residence in Escondido has tragically passed away, as confirmed by his wife. Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran, sustained serious injuries during the attack on May 20 near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Despite being in critical condition, Sheron succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.

The suspect, Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, has been charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats, and battery. Butler pleaded not guilty to the charges in court and is currently being held without bail. Security footage captured the altercation, showing the homeowner being attacked in his front yard before the suspect fled the scene.

Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia revealed that Sheron suffered severe injuries from the unprovoked assault, which included a punch to the jaw and subsequent hits to the head. Butler could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. The motive behind the attack and the relationship between Butler and Sheron remain unclear.

Despite previous incidents of harassment and threats related to their home displays, the couple had never experienced violence before. Following Sheron's death, a gathering of nearly 100 people outside his home showed support with flowers, balloons, and prayers. The community continues to rally around the family in the wake of this tragic event.
