The tech industry has seen a surge in AI-driven restructuring in 2026, with major companies like Amazon and Oracle announcing substantial job cuts and workforce changes. Amazon is set to eliminate approximately 16,000 jobs this year, while Oracle is reportedly reducing nearly 30,000 roles globally to prioritize automation, cost efficiency, and AI integration. Fintech firm Block, the company behind Square, recently cut nearly 40% of its workforce in February due to operational changes related to artificial intelligence adoption. LinkedIn also disclosed layoffs earlier this month, confirming hundreds of job cuts through WARN notices.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been emphasizing artificial intelligence as a key component of the company's strategy to compete with rivals like Google and OpenAI. The company's AI-focused approach has led to significant operational and workforce adjustments, including multiple rounds of layoffs aimed at enhancing efficiency. Zuckerberg has encouraged engineers to rely more on AI agents for coding and routine tasks, and there are reports of experiments with AI tools to manage some of his CEO responsibilities, such as collecting employee feedback.

The rapid transition to AI-driven operations at Meta has caused concern among employees. Over 1,000 workers have reportedly signed a petition urging the company to cease collecting data from employee devices for AI training purposes. The proposed monitoring includes tracking keystrokes, mouse activity, and screen content to enhance AI systems. Employees have expressed worries online about declining morale, increased workplace anxiety, and uncertainty about further layoffs as Meta accelerates its AI transformation.
