Tragedy Strikes: Evacuation of Children from Islamic Center of San Diego Amid Violent Attack

A chilling video captured the evacuation of young children from the Islamic Center of San Diego during a violent attack by two armed teenagers. The footage showed children, some as young as 5 years old, being led to safety by law enforcement officers in a single-file line. The children held onto each other as they made their way out of the center, with those at the front grasping the hand of a law enforcement agent. The Islamic Center houses the Al Rashid School, which provides education in Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Quran to students aged 5 and above.
The incident occurred at the start of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, a significant month in the Islamic calendar when worshippers embark on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Despite the chaos, the center's Imam Taha Hassane reassured the community that all students, staff, and teachers were safe and had been evacuated from the premises. The perpetrators, identified as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Velasquez, 18, were former high school students who carried out the attack, resulting in the tragic deaths of several individuals at the mosque.
Law enforcement responded to a call from a concerned mother reporting her son as a runaway juvenile, leading to an escalation of the threat level. The suspects were later found dead in a vehicle a few blocks away from the Islamic Center, having taken their own lives. Anti-Islamic writings and hate speech were discovered in the suspects' vehicle, along with firearms bearing disturbing symbols. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime, with law enforcement conducting searches at the suspects' residences.
The community mourned the loss of Amin Abdullah, a security guard, teacher, and store employee at the center, who was among the victims of the attack. Tributes poured in for Abdullah, described as a kind and welcoming individual who greeted everyone with a smile. The tragic events at the Islamic Center of San Diego have left the community in shock and disbelief, as they grapple with the aftermath of the senseless violence that unfolded on that fateful day.
