Next Up Music Awards (NUMAs): Celebrating Emerging Talent and Fostering Connections in the Australian Music Industry

The Australian Government's Revive Live program has recently funded a new national initiative called the Next Up Music Awards (NUMAs) and a paid Youth Intern Program. Founded by music executive Milly Petriella, the NUMAs aim to celebrate emerging talent in schools through student internships, fostering connections between young creators and the music industry. Industry Patrons like Sia and Troye Sivan, along with Artistic Director Mahalia Barnes and First Nations Artistic Director DOBBY, will support the initiative, with the inaugural event set to take place at Carriageworks in Sydney on January 28th, 2027.
The NUMAs will provide a platform for school-aged recording artists, producers, and songwriters to showcase their talent through live performances, mentorship, and paid youth roles. The awards will also recognize the important role of music educators, with Music Teacher of the Year awards presented by Music Australia in primary and secondary categories. The initiative aims to address the decline in music education access and support the future creative workforce by providing opportunities for young people to develop skills, confidence, and community engagement.
Supported by Revive Live and partnerships with organizations like the Song Room, the NUMAs will offer students aged 6-18 and their music teachers the chance to participate in nominations and intern applications. The program seeks to create a real-world space for creativity, connection, and live expression, offering hands-on involvement in the event to help young people explore their potential in various music-related roles. Stay tuned for more details on how to get involved in this exciting initiative.
