From Screen to Stage: The Journey of Schmigadoon! to Broadway

Musicals often have unique journeys to Broadway, and Schmigadoon! is no exception. The idea for this musical comedy, which pokes fun at classic Broadway shows, was conceived over 20 years ago by composer and book writer Cinco Paul. However, the show took a detour to Apple TV+ before finally making its way to the Broadway stage. Schmigadoon! follows the story of two doctors who stumble into a magical town where life is a musical, featuring performances by Broadway stars like Aaron Tveit and Kristin Chenoweth.
Originally intended for the stage, Schmigadoon! was adapted for television first, leading to some creative adjustments when transitioning back to the theater. The pacing, humor delivery, and narrative structure had to be reimagined for the live stage performance. Despite the challenges, the show received critical acclaim and earned multiple Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
The decision to focus on the first season of Schmigadoon! for the Broadway adaptation was deliberate, as it serves as a strong introduction to the story for new audiences. The cast for the stage production features fresh faces, with the exception of Broadway veteran Ann Harada, to test the material's strength independently of the TV show adaptation.
One of the highlights of the Broadway production is the portrayal of the character Betsy by McKenzie Kurtz, which offers a unique comedic twist compared to the TV version. Schmigadoon! strikes a balance between satire and love for musical theater, similar to the approach taken by shows like The Book of Mormon. The show aims to entertain audiences with humor while also celebrating the power of musical theater.
Looking ahead, Cinco Paul has other musical projects in the works, including a musical titled Sweet Jesus, which explores a teenage Mary Magdalene's crush on teenage Jesus set to an '80s/'90s R&B score. Despite his background in animation, Paul remains open to scoring a Disney musical film in the future, highlighting his passion for storytelling through music.
