Chinatown Pickpocket Ring Busted: Three Suspects Apprehended in San Francisco Police Operation
Over the weekend, three individuals suspected of being involved in a series of pickpocket crimes in San Francisco's Chinatown were apprehended following an extensive investigation by the San Francisco Police Department. Reports from the Chinatown community and local merchants alerted authorities to multiple pickpocket and theft incidents in the neighborhood since early last month, with one victim losing around $4,000 in property. After a thorough investigation, patrol officers, in collaboration with community members, identified a suspect vehicle and three individuals believed to be connected to the thefts.
Utilizing automated license plate reader cameras and a police drone, law enforcement tracked the vehicle and suspects within Chinatown on Saturday. Drone footage provided by the Police Department captured the suspects in the act of stealing from victims as they walked on the sidewalk, with one person taking personal items from backpacks or purses while two others served as lookouts. Plainclothes officers successfully apprehended all three suspects and recovered the stolen property, which was promptly returned to the victims.
The arrested suspects, identified as Stefan Ruset, 35; Marian Constantine, 30; and Florin Matei, 26, are residents of Vallejo. Following the arrests, a search warrant was executed at their Vallejo residence on Sunday, leading to the recovery of additional stolen property, including items linked to a 2024 pickpocket victim, and over $14,000 in cash. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew emphasized the importance of combating criminal activities targeting communities like Chinatown, underscoring the significance of the partnership between law enforcement and local merchants in ensuring public safety.
All three suspects were taken into custody at San Francisco County Jail on charges of felony grand theft, felony conspiracy, and misdemeanor possession of stolen property. The successful operation serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community in safeguarding the well-being of residents and visitors in San Francisco's Chinatown.
