Man Accused of Harassing Endangered Seal Lani: Defense Attorney's Perspective

A man from Washington has been accused of harassing an endangered seal named Lani, and his defense attorney is now providing his perspective on the incident. Igor Mykhaylovych Lytvynchuk, 38, was arrested by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration special agents near Seattle for throwing a rock at Lani on May 5. His attorney, Myles Breiner, explained that Lytvynchuk intended to scare the seal away as he was unaware of the significance of monk seals in Hawaii.

Despite witnesses reporting that Lytvynchuk claimed he could afford the fines, his attorney clarified that his client is not wealthy. If found guilty, Lytvynchuk could face up to a year in prison and substantial fines under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The incident, captured on video, showed a rock being thrown at the seal, causing her to react and remain immobile for a period, raising concerns for her well-being.

Hawaiian monk seals are critically endangered, with only 1,600 remaining in the wild following a devastating wildfire in 2023. U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife in Hawaii, particularly endangered species like Lani. He warned that those who harm protected wildlife will be swiftly held accountable in federal court. Lytvynchuk is set to appear in court on May 27, and his attorney acknowledged that he will face the consequences of his actions.
