Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Closure of 'Alligator Alcatraz' Immigration Detention Facility

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the closure of the state's immigration detention facility, nicknamed "Alligator Alcatraz," during a press conference in Titusville. The facility, established in 2025, was meant to be temporary due to federal resource constraints. With increased federal funding and operational adjustments, the state decided to shut down the facility located in the Florida Everglades. The Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) informed vendors of the closure, and approximately 1,400 detainees will be transferred out in the coming weeks.
Despite submitting a reimbursement request of $608 million to the federal government, which was approved but not fully processed, the state incurred an additional $300 million in operating costs. Governor DeSantis defended the facility's role in supporting federal immigration enforcement efforts, emphasizing the collaboration between state and federal authorities. However, Florida Representative Maxwell Frost criticized the facility, citing poor conditions and lack of dignity for detainees. Frost called for accountability and transparency regarding the facility's operations and expenses.
As the closure of "Alligator Alcatraz" progresses, the state and federal authorities will work together to ensure the smooth transfer of detainees and address any outstanding financial matters. The decision to close the facility reflects the changing landscape of immigration enforcement and the need for more sustainable solutions in handling migrant populations.
