Waymo Robotaxi Recall and Investigations: NHTSA Issues Recall for 3,791 Vehicles and Probes Incidents

Waymo is issuing a recall of 3,791 robotaxis in the U.S. due to a self-driving software issue that could potentially lead the vehicles to drive onto flooded roads, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall specifically affects certain fifth and sixth generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) in robotaxis. Waymo has taken steps to address the problem by adjusting the scope of operations to include more weather-related constraints and updating maps as a temporary solution. A permanent fix is currently in development. In addition to this recall, Waymo is also under investigation by the NHTSA following an incident where one of its self-driving vehicles hit a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California. Another investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into an incident where Waymo self-driving vehicles passed a stopped school bus with its lights activated, violating Texas state law.
