Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of Dash Adventures Founder on Mount Makalu

Tragic news has emerged from the Himalayas as Dash Adventures founders Shelley Johannesen and David Ashley were caught in an avalanche while descending Mount Makalu. Johannesen tragically lost her life in the incident. Ashley and a sherpa were airlifted to Katmandu for medical treatment following the avalanche.

The group, which also included Tawa Sherpa and Phurba Sonam Sherpa, had successfully reached the 8,485-foot peak the day before the avalanche occurred. Gripped magazine reported that the avalanche struck below Camp 3, causing a section of the mountain fixed with 300-400 meters of rope to give way at around 7,000 meters.

Despite the rescue efforts, Johannesen could not survive her injuries and passed away at the site of the avalanche. Phurba Sonam Sherpa was fortunate to be rescued by climbers from nearby Camp 2 who witnessed the tragic incident unfold.

The mountaineering community mourns the loss of Shelley Johannesen and sends thoughts and prayers to David Ashley, the sherpa, and all those affected by this devastating event. The dangers of high-altitude mountaineering serve as a reminder of the risks involved in pursuing such challenging adventures.
