From Cancer Diagnosis to Motherhood: Maralee Lellio's Inspirational Journey

Maralee Lellio was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer at a young age of 29. She underwent chemotherapy and surgery as part of her treatment plan. Despite the challenges, she remained focused on her dream of expanding her family. Lellio froze embryos before starting chemotherapy and later underwent a double mastectomy. After being declared cancer-free in September 2019, she and her husband began IVF to have a second child.

However, Lellio's joy was short-lived as she started experiencing severe headaches and dizziness. A CT scan did not reveal anything unusual, but the symptoms persisted. In the summer of 2020, she sought medical advice through a telehealth appointment, which led to an emergency room visit. An MRI revealed a large brain tumor, indicating a recurrence of her cancer as Stage IV breast cancer that had spread to her brain.

Despite undergoing a craniotomy to remove the tumor, the cancer returned aggressively. Lellio sought treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, where she underwent radiation therapy. The treatment was challenging, causing seizures and mobility issues, leading to a period of depression. However, a conversation with her husband sparked a newfound hope and determination to fight the disease.

Under the care of Dr. Halle Moore, Lellio's brain tumor responded well to treatment, shrinking significantly. She was prescribed a PARP inhibitor, a targeted therapy for her specific genetic mutation. After two years on the medication and being cancer-free, Lellio expressed her desire to have another child. With Dr. Moore's support, she discontinued the treatment and successfully became pregnant naturally.

In July 2024, Lellio and her husband welcomed their second daughter, fulfilling her dream of expanding her family. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Lellio remains grateful for her two daughters and the opportunity to live a fulfilling life. She continues to undergo regular scans and is scheduled for a hysterectomy to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

Lellio's journey is a testament to the unpredictability of cancer and the importance of innovative treatments in improving outcomes. She has returned to work as a teacher and cherishes every moment with her family. This Mother's Day, Lellio celebrates the seemingly impossible journey she has overcome and the blessings she holds dear.
