Remembering Bubbles: The Enduring Legacy of Michael Jackson's Beloved Chimpanzee

The latest biopic about Michael Jackson, titled Michael, has brought his famous chimpanzee Bubbles back into the limelight. Bubbles was acquired by Jackson in the mid-1980s from a Texas research facility with the help of animal trainer Bob Dunn. The chimp was treated like a child by Jackson and lived with him at the Encino home before moving to the Neverland Ranch. Bubbles accompanied Jackson on his travels worldwide and became a beloved companion to the King of Pop.
Bubbles was a regular presence on music video sets and at press events, charming fans and causing mischief along the way. Despite his playful nature, Bubbles became too strong and large to be kept as a household pet. He was moved to the Center for Great Apes in Florida in 2005, where he still resides today. The Jackson estate continues to support his care at the center, where he enjoys painting, listening to music, and basking in the Florida sun.
The real Bubbles, now weighing around 170 pounds, has lived peacefully for two decades at the Florida center. He has a gentle demeanor and enjoys carrying treasures in Velcro backpacks. Bubbles even helped raise two baby chimps upon his arrival in Florida. The new Michael biopic uses CGI instead of real apes on screen, but the legacy of Bubbles lives on as a reminder of the special bond between Michael Jackson and his beloved chimp.
