Preserving History: The Threat of Trump's Triumphal Arch and Historical Erasure in Washington, D.C.

As a student at The George Washington University, I used to find solace and inspiration at the Lincoln Memorial, away from the hustle of university life. The view of the Potomac River and the Memorial Bridge, with Arlington National Cemetery in the distance, was my personal retreat. However, plans for a triumphal arch dedicated to Donald Trump threaten to obstruct this iconic view and overshadow the historical significance of the area.
The proposed arch, intended to honor Trump, would disrupt the visual connection between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington House, where President Kennedy is buried. This interference not only erases the legacy of Kennedy but also undermines the ongoing struggle for civil rights, particularly for Black Americans. Trump's self-centered approach to memorialization reflects a broader agenda of historical erasure that seeks to diminish the contributions of marginalized communities.
In addition to the proposed arch, Trump's renovation of the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial has sparked controversy. The unnecessary transformation of this historic site, which has been a backdrop for significant protests and demonstrations for equal rights, reflects a disregard for the cultural and symbolic importance of the space. Trump's decision to alter the pool's appearance, seemingly as a deliberate dig at Obama, further underscores his attempts to erase the legacy of his predecessor.
Beyond the architectural changes, Trump's demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make way for a ballroom represents a loss of women's history and the legacy of first ladies who used the space to champion important initiatives. By disregarding the historical significance of these spaces, Trump's actions reflect a broader pattern of erasure and revisionism aimed at reshaping the nation's liberal past to suit his own agenda.
In his efforts to leave a lasting mark on the nation's capital, Trump's approach to historical preservation is marked by a desire to rewrite history rather than learn from it. By erasing and altering significant historical sites and landmarks, Trump seeks to elevate himself at the expense of the rich and diverse history of the United States. As we bear witness to these acts of erasure, it becomes imperative to remember and honor the contributions of those who have shaped our nation's history and continue to fight for equality and justice.
