Meenu Batra: A Single Mother's Fight Against ICE Detention and the Pursuit of Citizenship

A single mother of four from Texas, Meenu Batra, expressed her fear of being detained by ICE again after spending over six weeks in custody. Despite having legal documents, she was arrested at a Texas airport on her way to work in Milwaukee. Batra, who has been living and working legally in the U.S. for years, described the uncertainty and dehumanization she experienced while in ICE detention.

During her time in custody, Batra encountered other women who were not violent criminals, contrary to the Trump administration's focus on targeting such individuals. A federal judge eventually ordered her release, stating that there was no clear reason for her detention. Batra's children are relieved that she is back home, but they are still coping with the trauma of the ordeal.

Batra fled to the U.S. as a teenager after her parents were killed in India due to religious violence. Although she was granted withholding of removal status, she was unable to apply for citizenship. However, her son's enlistment in the Army provides her with a pathway to citizenship as parents of U.S. service members are eligible to apply. Batra's legal battle against her detainment is ongoing, and she criticized the DHS statement for being disrespectful to judges and the judiciary.

Despite facing challenges and uncertainty, Batra remains hopeful and believes in the system. Her story sheds light on the experiences of individuals caught in the complex web of immigration enforcement in the U.S.
