Reviving the Presidential Fitness Test Award: Trump's Initiative to Make America Healthy Again

President Donald Trump is set to sign a presidential memorandum to reinstate the Presidential Fitness Test Award, a school-based fitness program that was discontinued during the Obama administration. The signing ceremony will include members of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, as well as high-profile athletes like Bryson DeChambeau, Gary Player, Amani Oruwariye, and Noah Syndergaard. This move aligns with the administration's "Make America Healthy Again" initiative, aiming to reintroduce a performance-based fitness benchmark for students across the country.
Last year, Trump signed an executive order to revive the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and the Presidential Fitness Test. The new award will focus on measurable athletic performance standards, similar to the original test that ranked students based on physical achievements. The Obama-era Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which replaced the original test, prioritized assessing health over athleticism for American youth.
The President’s Council on Youth Fitness was initially established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to address concerns about American children's physical fitness compared to their European counterparts. Under President John F. Kennedy, schools began implementing a fitness test as part of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. The upcoming signing of the memorandum by Trump signifies a significant step towards reinstating the fitness test and awards in schools nationwide.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 21% of Americans aged 2 to 19 were classified as obese between 2021 and 2023, with 7% of American youths experiencing severe obesity. The focus on promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles through initiatives like the Presidential Fitness Test Award aims to combat these concerning statistics and encourage youth to prioritize their well-being.
President Trump's upcoming signing of the presidential memorandum will be followed by an event on the South Lawn to commemorate National Youth Sports and Fitness Month. Cabinet secretaries from various departments, including Pete Hegseth, Robert Kennedy Jr., Scott Turner, and Linda McMahon, will also be present at the ceremony. This initiative underscores the administration's commitment to promoting physical fitness and overall health among American youth.
