Tragic Death Following Hernia Surgery: Iowa Woman's Family Files Lawsuit Against Decatur County Hospital Staff

An Iowa woman tragically passed away following a routine hernia repair surgery due to complications that were allegedly overlooked by medical staff at Decatur County Hospital. Laura Belt, 46, suffered from a bowel perforation that led to sepsis, resulting in her death in May 2024. Her family has filed a lawsuit against surgeon Dr. Edwin Vincent Wehling and nurses Brandi Oesch and Tammy Roberts for medical malpractice.
After undergoing the hernia repair surgery at Decatur County Hospital, Belt experienced discomfort, anxiety, and tearfulness, along with significant drainage of feculent liquid from her incision site. Despite expressing her concerns to the hospital staff, she was discharged a week after the surgery with ongoing leakage from the incision. The nurses assured her that the drainage was normal and would continue for a month.
Following her discharge, Belt continued to experience drainage of stool from her wound, prompting her to contact the nurses for advice. Despite showing them images of the fluid, she was reassured that it was normal. However, her condition worsened, and she was eventually taken to Wayne County Hospital's Emergency Department, where she was diagnosed with septic shock and necrotic tissue at the incision site.
The lawsuit alleges that the nurses failed to take appropriate action despite being aware of Belt's deteriorating condition. A back-charted entry in Belt's medical record indicated that the nurses had been informed of the situation and had contacted Dr. Wehling for advice. However, the prescribed antibiotic was not administered, and Belt tragically passed away on May 15, 2024.
Dr. Wehling, Oesch, and Roberts have denied any wrongdoing in Belt's case, with Wehling suggesting that her complications may have been due to pre-existing or subsequent medical conditions. The lawsuit is set for trial on August 23 to address the allegations of medical malpractice and negligence in Laura Belt's care.
