Assistance for Spirit Airlines Passengers and Employees: Collaborative Efforts by Major Airlines and the U.S. Department of Transportation

The U.S. Department of Transportation, led by Sean P. Duffy, has collaborated with major airlines to assist passengers and employees impacted by the shutdown of Spirit Airlines. Airlines like American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, Avelo Airlines, and Breeze Airways are offering support options for affected travelers. To aid stranded passengers in rebooking flights, airlines are capping ticket prices for former Spirit customers who provide proof of a canceled booking.
In addition to capping ticket prices, airlines are implementing cost-saving measures to help affected travelers. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are reducing fares on high-demand routes previously served by Spirit. Allegiant Air has frozen fares on overlapping routes, while Frontier Airlines is providing discounts of up to 50% off base fares across its network until May 10. Airlines are also extending travel privileges and offering jump seat access to assist former Spirit employees, including pilots, flight attendants, and other staff.
To further support displaced workers, American Airlines and United Airlines are launching dedicated hiring microsites and offering expedited interview opportunities. While passengers seeking refunds may encounter challenges due to bankruptcy proceedings, the Department of Transportation advises affected individuals to act promptly as many fare deals are time-limited.
