Remembering James Chiu: A Legacy of Hospitality and Inspiration

James Chiu, the co-founder and president of Mandarin Restaurants, passed away after a brave battle with pulmonary fibrosis. The announcement was made on social media, where Mandarin expressed their loss of a true restaurant icon and advocate for people and community. Chiu's vision for exceptional food and customer service will continue to inspire future generations in the hospitality industry.

Chiu's family paid tribute to his positive and grateful outlook on life until his peaceful passing. Born to Taiwanese immigrants in Montreal, Chiu's culinary journey began with the opening of his first restaurant, "Sweet 'N Sour," after graduating from Concordia University. His passion for hospitality led him to Ontario, where he, along with his family and friends, acquired a Chinese restaurant in Brampton, which later became the renowned Mandarin chain.

Under Chiu's leadership, Mandarin expanded to 29 locations across Ontario, earning him numerous accolades such as the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal Award and the Ontario Hostelry Institute Wall of Fame Induction. Chiu's commitment to education and philanthropy was evident through scholarships for hospitality students and support for various charitable causes in health care, social services, and arts and culture.

Chiu is survived by his wife, Sheila, children Tina, Irene, and Peter, and seven grandchildren. His family remembers him for his humor, wisdom, and kindness, celebrating his vibrant life and lasting impact on the restaurant industry.
