The Boeing 737, known as Flight 1980 from San Francisco, collided with the object at approximately 3,000 feet during its descent, as heard in an air traffic control recording. The pilot described the drone as small, red, and shiny. Fortunately, there were no injuries or immediate signs of damage to the aircraft.
While midair collisions between planes and drones are rare, incidents of close encounters have been on the rise, prompting safety concerns regarding unauthorized drone activity near airports. The incident raised questions online about how a consumer drone could reach such altitudes in controlled airspace. United Airlines has not yet commented on the incident.
