US-Pakistan Diplomatic Standoff: Trump Cancels Trip Amid Iran War Tensions

The US President, Donald Trump, decided to cancel a planned trip by US officials to Pakistan for discussions on the Iran war, following a visit by Tehran's delegation to Islamabad. Trump mentioned that special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner would be wasting too much time and stated that Iran could initiate talks by calling directly. Despite Trump extending a ceasefire that was set to expire on April 22, diplomatic efforts have hit a roadblock, with both sides engaged in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear aspirations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi met with Pakistan as a mediator, expressing Iran's stance on ending the war but questioning the seriousness of the US towards diplomacy. The White House had initially indicated that Iran was willing to engage in talks, but Iran clarified that there were no direct meeting plans. Trump confirmed the continuation of the ceasefire on Saturday, despite the cancellation of the US trip, emphasizing that the war resumption was not under consideration at the moment.

Trump highlighted the internal discord within Iran's leadership and asserted the US's advantageous position in the conflict. The White House had Vice-President JD Vance on standby for successful talks, but his absence from the planned delegation hinted at a lack of significant progress expected. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated Tehran's openness to negotiations but pointed out that breaches of commitments and threats were hindering genuine talks.

Iran's Foreign Minister Araghchi described his visit to Pakistan as fruitful, where he shared Iran's proposed framework to end the war permanently. However, he expressed skepticism about the US's commitment to diplomacy. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif acknowledged the positive exchange of views on the regional situation during their meeting. Araghchi is set to return to Islamabad after visiting Oman, as per Iranian state media reports.

In a separate development, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon resulted in casualties, with Hezbollah firing rockets at Israel. Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, both sides have engaged in hostilities, accusing each other of violating the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued orders to target Hezbollah in Lebanon vigorously. The situation remains tense in the region, with ongoing clashes between the two parties.
