Tragic Discovery: Previous Owner of 'Home Alone' House Found Deceased in Lake Forest

The previous owner of the iconic house from the movie "Home Alone" has been discovered deceased in a wooded area in Lake Forest following charges related to possessing child sexual abuse images. The Lake Forest Fire Department responded to a report of an unresponsive person in the Lake Forest Open Lands Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve. The individual, identified as John Abendshien, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death.

Abendshien had recently been released from jail after being charged with possession of child sexual abuse material. The Lake Forest Police Department and Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office executed a search warrant at his residence, leading to the discovery of incriminating evidence. Abendshien admitted to owning the Google Drive account associated with the illegal content. The case raised significant concerns, and law enforcement agencies are dedicated to investigating and prosecuting such offenses to safeguard children and the community.

Despite the prosecution's efforts to detain Abendshien, he was released by Lake County Judge James Simonian. The State’s Attorney’s Office highlighted the disturbing nature of the evidence found, including images of nude children and graphic stories involving real individuals. Abendshien's defense emphasized his lack of criminal history and argued against his potential danger to others. The case remains a shocking and tragic incident that underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and harm.
