Senate Republicans Approve $70 Billion Budget Blueprint for Immigration Enforcement Agencies in Party-Line Vote

Senate Republicans have approved a budget blueprint in a party-line vote to allocate billions of dollars to immigration enforcement agencies. The plan aims to fund agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol for the remainder of President Donald Trump's term. The vote, which took place just after 3:30 a.m., saw GOP Senators Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski as the only lawmakers to break ranks.
The budget blueprint, totaling around $70 billion, was passed without Democratic support, as they have been pushing for new restrictions on how immigration agencies operate. Republican Senate Budget Chair Lindsey Graham emphasized the necessity of funding for Border Patrol and ICE. Despite Democratic attempts to broaden the budget framework to include funding for school meals and other social programs, Republicans rejected these proposals in favor of prioritizing immigration enforcement.
The resolution now needs to pass through the House, where some GOP lawmakers are considering expanding the budget resolution to include additional party priorities. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune is focused on keeping the budget resolution narrow to expedite the process and meet the June 1 deadline set by President Trump. Any changes to the budget resolution would require more amendment votes and could delay the process.
During the voting spree, the Senate rejected a proposal to add elements of the SAVE America Act elections bill to the immigration enforcement bill. This move was opposed by some Republican senators who believed it would broaden the legislation beyond its intended scope. Once the budget resolution is adopted in both chambers, congressional committees will proceed to draft legislation to allocate the funding outlined in the budget.
House GOP leaders are currently planning to stick with the narrow budget blueprint, as endorsed by Trump, who urged Republican senators to remain united and reject potential amendments. The overnight voting session, known as a "vote-a-rama," is part of the budget reconciliation process used by Republicans to bypass a Democratic filibuster in the Senate. This process allows Senate Democrats to propose amendments on various issues, highlighting cost-of-living concerns as they focus on affordability in the upcoming midterm elections.
