Kalshi Penalizes Candidates for Trading on Election Outcomes: Enforcement Actions Uphold Fair Trading Practices

Kalshi, a prediction market platform, recently identified and penalized three candidates running for federal office who attempted to trade on their own election outcomes. The platform's enforcement actions underscore its commitment to preventing unfair trading practices. Candidates from Minnesota, Texas, and Virginia were found to have violated Kalshi's rules, resulting in fines and suspensions.
In the case of a candidate from Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District Democratic primary, they traded a small amount on their own election outcome, leading to a fine of $539.85 and a five-year suspension from the platform. A Texas Republican candidate was barred from trading in the state's 21st Congressional District primary race, paying a $784.20 fine and accepting a 5-year suspension. Additionally, a Virginia Democrat allegedly bet on potential candidates for public office and later traded on himself to win the Democratic primary, resulting in a $6,229.30 fine and a five-year suspension.
Kalshi emphasized that any trade by political candidates that could influence a market based on their race participation violates the platform's rules, regardless of the trade's size. While the candidates were not named in the press release, regulatory filings to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission identified them as Ezekiel Enriquez, a Texas Republican; Minnesota state Sen. Matt Klein, a Democrat; and Mark Moran, an independent Virginia U.S. Senate candidate.
The platform's actions highlight its commitment to maintaining fair trading practices and ensuring the integrity of its prediction market. Despite recent reports of suspected insider trading in the Trump administration, no fines or suspensions have been reported in connection to those trades. Notably, President Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., has affiliations with major prediction markets, serving as an investor and advisory board member at Polymarket and a strategic advisor at Kalshi.
