Title: "South Africa's Police Chief Faces Charges in Health Contract Scandal

South Africa's police chief is facing charges for allegedly failing to provide proper oversight in a health contract that is now under criminal investigation. General Fannie Masemola, 62, has been accused of violating South Africa's Public Finance Management Act in connection with a controversial $21m tender. The case is part of a broader inquiry into corruption involving police officers and politicians. Masemola denies the charges and is set to appear in court on May 13 along with other individuals involved in the case.
The charges against Masemola stem from a tender awarded to businessman Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala's company Medicare24 Tshwane District in 2024. The contract, intended to provide health services to the police, was cancelled in 2025. Several senior police officers, including Masemola, have been charged over their roles in awarding the contract. While others face corruption charges, Masemola is accused of breaching the public finances act as the police's accounting officer.
Masemola's case has been postponed to May 13, when he will join other individuals implicated in the case. The allegations surrounding the contract were brought to light during the Madlanga Commission inquiry, initiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate corruption within the police force. Masemola is the third police chief to face a criminal investigation during his tenure, following previous cases involving Jackie Selebi and Khomotso Phahlane.
