Justice Served: 73-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 20 Years for 1983 Murder Case Closure

A 73-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 1983 murder of his girlfriend, closing a case that had remained unsolved for over four decades. The victim, 27-year-old Teresa Peroni, was last seen with Marcus Sanfratello at a party in Josephine County. Peroni's disappearance was initially considered suspicious, but there was not enough evidence to make an arrest at the time.
In 1997, a human skull was discovered on a nearby property, which was later confirmed through DNA testing to belong to Peroni. The case was reopened in 2024 with the help of the Oregon Department of Justice, leading to the collection of additional DNA evidence that implicated Sanfratello in the murder. He was indicted on a murder charge in 2025 and subsequently arrested in California before being extradited to Oregon.
Sanfratello pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, citing extreme emotional disturbance at the time of Peroni's death. He will serve a minimum of 10 years in prison as part of the plea agreement. Oregon Attorney General Rayfield emphasized the importance of seeking justice for victims and their families, regardless of the time that has passed since the crime occurred.
The resolution of this long-standing case serves as a reminder of the commitment to pursuing justice and holding individuals accountable for their actions, no matter how much time has elapsed. The perseverance of law enforcement and the collaboration between agencies have brought closure to Teresa Peroni's family after a 43-year wait for answers.
