Unraveling the Mystery: Michigan Authorities Solve Decades-Old Cold Case Using DNA Technology

Michigan authorities have solved a four-decades-old cold case involving the murder of 16-year-old Sheri Jo Elliott using advanced DNA technology. The culprit, Roni Collins, a 75-year-old resident of Grand Blanc, was identified as Elliott's killer. Elliott went missing on Nov. 16, 1983, while walking to the bus stop in Flint and was later found sexually assaulted and shot multiple times. After an extensive search, her body was discovered in a ditch in Saginaw County four days after her disappearance. The case saw a breakthrough in 2023 when the Michigan State Police, in collaboration with the Western Michigan University Cold Case Program, reexamined the evidence, leading to the identification of Collins through DNA analysis. Despite Collins' suicide before providing a DNA sample, forensic genetic genealogy confirmed his involvement in the crime. This case is another example of how DNA technology is helping solve long-standing mysteries and bringing closure to families.
