Bear-ly Believable: California Trio Convicted of Insurance Fraud Involving Bear Costume Scheme

Three individuals in California have been convicted of insurance fraud after orchestrating a peculiar scheme involving a person in a bear costume damaging high-end vehicles. The California Insurance Department revealed that the trio staged fake attacks inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes in 2024, subsequently filing fraudulent claims totaling nearly $142,000 from insurance companies. Referred to as "Operation Bear Claw," the culprits, two men and a woman from the Los Angeles area, entered no contest pleas to felony insurance fraud and were sentenced to a weekend jail program, followed by probation. Additionally, two of them were directed to pay restitution exceeding $50,000. A fourth individual is scheduled for a court appearance in September.

The group allegedly submitted multiple videos depicting a bear purportedly causing damage inside the vehicles, shot in the San Bernardino Mountains, to the insurance companies as evidence for their claims. Images provided by the insurance department displayed what seemed to be scratches on the seats and doors. Following a review by a California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist, it was determined that the footage featured a "human in a bear suit." Subsequently, a search warrant was executed, leading to the discovery of the bear costume at the suspects' residence.

Instances of bears intruding into homes or rummaging through trash cans in pursuit of food have become a prevalent issue in California, spanning from Lake Tahoe in the Sierra to the suburban areas near Los Angeles. Some bears have been known to raid refrigerators and indulge in backyard pools and hot tubs.
