Animal Welfare Activists' Attempt to Seize Beagles at Ridglan Farms: Police Intervention and Arrests
Approximately 1,000 animal welfare activists attempted to enter a beagle breeding and research facility in Wisconsin but were stopped by police using rubber bullets and pepper spray. The protesters were trying to take beagles from the Ridglan Farms facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett stated that the protesters were violent and disregarded designated protest areas, leading to arrests. Some protesters managed to breach barricades but were unable to access the facility where around 2,000 beagles are housed.
Despite their efforts, the activists were unsuccessful in seizing any dogs from the facility. The Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs had planned to take action the following day but initiated the operation earlier. The group's leader, Wayne Hsiung, was arrested during the protest. The sheriff's department reported that a person who drove a pickup truck through the property's gate was also arrested, preventing a potentially dangerous situation.
The protest followed a previous break-in at the facility on March 15, where allegations of animal abuse, particularly towards beagles, were made. Ridglan Farms, however, has denied mistreating animals and is set to surrender its state breeding license in July. The facility maintains that there is no credible evidence of animal abuse or neglect. The activists later moved their protest to the jail in downtown Madison.
In conclusion, the attempted seizure of beagles from the Ridglan Farms facility in Wisconsin by animal welfare activists was met with police intervention, arrests, and unsuccessful attempts to access the facility. The ongoing dispute over alleged animal mistreatment at the facility continues to spark protests and legal actions.
