Animal Rights Activists Clash with Law Enforcement at Beagle Breeding Facility in Wisconsin
Approximately 1,000 animal rights activists attempted to storm a beagle breeding facility in Wisconsin, but were met with resistance from law enforcement using rubber bullets, tear gas, and pepper spray. The incident at Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds turned violent as protesters tried to break into the property and clashed with officers. The demonstrators disregarded designated protest areas and obstructed nearby roads, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.
The facility, housing around 2,000 beagles, was protected by barricades that prevented protesters from gaining access to the buildings. Despite their efforts to breach the defenses, including navigating through a trench filled with obstacles, the activists were unable to reach the animals. One individual who drove a pickup truck through the front gate was arrested, along with several others. Law enforcement had prepared a comprehensive response plan, confiscating tools like saws and sledgehammers from the protesters.
Wayne Hsiung, the leader of the Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs, was apprehended on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary shortly after entering the property. Prior to the incident, Hsiung had discussed the group's intentions on a podcast. Despite the failed attempt, he expressed admiration for the activists' courage and determination to advocate for the welfare of the dogs. This operation marked the group's second endeavor in a short period, following a previous successful entry into the facility where they rescued 30 beagles.
In March, activists had breached the same facility and rescued dogs before facing arrests. Ridglan Farms had reached an agreement with prosecutors to surrender its breeding license to avoid animal mistreatment charges. The company maintains its innocence, stating that no credible evidence of abuse has been substantiated. The ongoing conflict between animal rights activists and the breeding facility underscores the contentious nature of the issue and the challenges faced by those advocating for animal welfare.
