President Min Aung Hlaing Grants Amnesty to Thousands of Prisoners in Myanmar

Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing has granted amnesty to 4,335 prisoners, as reported by state television on Friday. The names of the individuals benefiting from the amnesty were not revealed. Amnesties are a customary practice in Myanmar to commemorate significant events like Independence Day and the New Year. Among those granted amnesty were 179 foreign nationals who would be deported. The announcement also mentioned changes in sentences for other prisoners, such as commutation of death sentences to life and reductions in prison terms by one-sixth.

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, over 30,000 individuals have been detained on political charges since the military coup in 2021. This includes prominent figures like Aung San Suu Kyi, Win Myint, and members of the National League for Democracy party. Suu Kyi, who is currently serving a 27-year sentence, has been accused of various offenses, with her allies claiming the charges are politically motivated. Her son, Kim Aris, has expressed concerns about her deteriorating health and uncertain whereabouts.

In previous instances, Myanmar's junta announced pardons for thousands of individuals, with the latest amnesty being the third in the past six months. President Min Aung Hlaing, who was recently elected by parliament, emphasized peace, stability, and reconciliation as his top priorities during his inauguration. The country continues to grapple with a civil war that has displaced millions of people.
